Connect with nature at this ecologically diverse bird sanctuary nestled in Trinidad’s picturesque northern range.
Travel up the Northern Range to the home of the Asa Wright Nature Centre and Lodge, a 1,500 acres of mostly forested estate. As you make your way along the Blanchisseuse Road, the adventure has begun – vines hanging, thick tropical forest surrounds you, lush Christophene farming and the sounds of nature – you are definitely getting nearer to your destination.
This destination is one of the top bird watching spots in the Caribbean. The tour of this ecologically diverse nature centre will bring you intimately in tour with a variety of the flora and fauna indigenous to Trinidad. The species lists are impressive: 108 mammals; 460 birds; 55 reptiles; 25 amphibians; and 617 butterflies. No other area in the West Indies, and few, if any, areas of comparable size in tropical America, can match this species diversity.
With 460 birds, Asa Wright is a bird lover’s haven! Bird watchers come from all over the world to visit this bird sanctuary to catch a glimpse of the rare and beautiful birds. Be on the look out for trogans, manikins, hummingbirds and mot mots.
Later you can either relax on the open air veranda while sipping on a cup of locally grown coffee or visit the waterfall for a dip in a pool of cool mountain water. Â Reservations for lunch can be made as well as the opportunity to purchase tea, local coffee and snacks (cost not included).
